African Macassar Ebony Bust Head Sculpture Nigerian Yuba

Rare offering from a private collection of African art.The collector
purchased this piece from the estate of a missionary who spent many
years living in Africa. Made of Macassar Ebony, a lesser known form of
ebony that varies in coloration from cream, brown, grey and black often
with streaks and swirls of multiple colors throughout the wood. Because
of this interesting and beautiful pattern, Macassar ebony often is used
mainly for decorative accents, sculptures and art pieces. The wood is
less brittle than other forms of ebony. It is very durable and is less
likely to split. The carved sculptural head stands 10 3/4" tall. The
base measures 6" x 4 3/8". The masterworks carving is from Yuba,
Nigeria.
