Alexander Wilson is known as the father of American ornithology. Born in Scotland in 1766 he immigrated to the United States in 1794. He died in 1813. Plate 70 is a hand colored engraving. It depicts several species of ducks, Long Tailed Duck male and female, Wood Duck summer plumage, Green Winged Teal, Canvas Back, Red Headed Duck and Mallard Duck. The first edition of American Ornithology was printed from 1808-1814 and was an outstanding contribution to the world of ornithology as the first work on American birds. The paper of this edition was of poor quality. In 1829 a new edition was print high quality paper with superior hand coloring. Outside framed dimensions 19 1/4" x 15 5/8". Interior print dimensions 14 3/4" x 11 1/4". There is water damage to the print in the lower border.
